Amira and the Library Owl
Amira claimed the window seat the way a cat claims a sunbeam — by arriving and becoming inevitable. The library smelled of paper and raincoats. On a high shelf an owl, painted into a spine, seemed to lean. “I am only reading until the lamps change,” Amira told it. The owl, being an illustration, did not argue. Evening folded itself against the glass. Amira turned a page as carefully as a secret.
