Eli and the Apartment Moon

Eli sat on the fire escape because the moon had parked itself over the tracks as if it were waiting for a train. The city made its usual clatter, which Eli found comforting, the way some people find rain comforting. “You can come in after this song,” he told the moon, meaning the next subway. A train slid under the building and the railing hummed in his hands. The moon did not board. It never does. It just keeps the appointment.
